Every October the same thing happens: the parasols fold on the Mediterranean, and the search for a beach day moves on. The good news is that a real beach club day does not end with the European summer, it just changes continent. Dubai and Abu Dhabi: the polished option

The Gulf runs its high season from October to April, and nowhere is the beach club day more of a production. Dubai alone has 37 clubs in our catalogue, and it is the one destination where most clubs publish their prices: day passes are the norm, usually per person and often fully redeemable against food and drinks, so the entrance fee becomes your lunch budget. The Canary Islands: winter sun without the long haul

Four hours from most of Europe and warm all year. Tenerife's Playa de las Americas has the full day-to-night clubs, while Fuerteventura's Costa Calma trades music for space and wind-shaped beaches. This is the only place in Europe where a January beach club day genuinely works.

Cape Town: the counter-season classic

From November to March the Atlantic seaboard is at its best. The scene splits between Camps Bay's strip facing the Twelve Apostles, the terrace above Clifton Fourth, and the harbour beach at Granger Bay with Robben Island on the horizon. The ocean is cold; the sunsets are not.

Bali, Phuket and Koh Samui: the beach club heartland

Southeast Asia is where the modern beach club format lives its biggest life. Canggu and Seminyak stack the famous names within a few kilometres of each other, from the bamboo A-frame of Finns to the reclaimed-shutter amphitheatre of Potato Head, while the Uluwatu cliffs host the spectacular ones. Phuket's west coast and Koh Samui's Bophut add the Thai version. High season on these coasts falls exactly in the European winter.

Mexico and Miami: the Caribbean winter

Playa del Carmen keeps its beach clubs running on warm Caribbean water through the driest months of the year, and Tulum adds the design-led version. Miami's season is the northern winter outright, with South Beach's daybeds at their busiest between December and March.
